what shall be your last word spoken
what shall be that last word said
will there be a soft one listening
there beside your final bed
..
or if you would leave on some non descript day
will the word be a mumble as you rush on your way
as you kiss her, fleeting, on a passing cheek
“pickup my dry cleaning, it’s been over a week”
..
week?
..
so much hurrah over baby’s first word
yet of grandad’s last, who knows; no one heard
no one leaned into the crackles of fading breath
to decipher his utterances
welcoming
death
..
what shall be your last word spoken
what shall be that last word said
speak as if that last day arrives
so fleeting is life
on fragile thread
..
For Soriah…. I was listening x
Nice one!

speak as if that last day arrives – these words stay with me, and the entire poetry very touching! It is so humbling and powerful to have a reminder of how fleeting life is. Soriah came to me mind as I began reading …

Yes dear lady, it’s for her. I’ve received a last message from Soriah this morning..and have spent most of my time since watching a fierce wind push clouds across my sky. I think her soul readies for flight ❤️❤️

A moving tribute, subtly weaving the sense of recent loss with feelings of loss from elsewhere. Diana, you’ve conveyed that which you needed to express in a way that honours without intrusion of privacy. A beautiful and erudite piece indeed. x

My gosh, this piece brought serious tears to my eyes. I hope you’re okay? A couple days ago I noticed her blog was gone already, terribly poignant. Just discovered that beautiful place. Sigh. 🌸🦋

I don’t think I have a choice but to eventually be ok. I received a last email from her which was the singularly most beautiful email I have ever received in my life. Such warmth even though she was so weak. A final poem from frail fingers. Amazing woman really. So in awe of her courage. So devastated to lose a friend so quickly.

oh D my heart breaks for you!
How kind she left such beauty for you. But, no doubt, she was grateful for the beauty you brought into her life! Hugs

Thanks sweetie! Yes we took to exchanging daily emails as she wasn’t going out hardly at all anymore. I thought she would live a few more months at least. She was a teacher of literature and her letters were art themselves.
Yes she was most surprised and grateful to bond through letters. We shared some intimate thoughts as one does when days are dwindling. Yet I was selfish, I really wanted more time. Sigh. She is a beautiful lesson to me, to be reminded of the fragility of life and the importance of love till the last moment.
She said “may you be blessed with a long and healthy life filled with love. Beyond that, nothing matters”
Oh my god, crying again here …

I’m lost for words !! I read a lot of poems on hundreds of blog sites, and every now and then, I come across a poem that knocks me outta my socks, and I print them off and put them in a folder of mine, called “Special Poems By Other Poets”, and now your superb poem, “The Last Word”, is in that special folder….. and when I’ve spoken my last word, my poem folders will be going with me……

A beautiful homage. What would be someone’s last words…held within the breath they take. Certainly so many deeply felt thoughts come to mind. I am sure she will be donning angel wings, most certainly.

Oh this was heartbreaking! This is so raw and genuine. It transported me to your cracked soul. I feel for you and Soriah. You brought her so much and you were the recipient of some of her precious last words. You are such a generous open-hearted soul. We are all drawn to your kindness and your gorgeous art.

Thank you. Such heady compliments. Wow.
B, the photograph I took after Soriah’s last letter. You have never seen such a sky as the clouds raced and tumbled. I was sure she was moving the heaven’s as if riding on a celestial chariot. There were numerous days of such beautiful skies; sunsets. I hold her responsible and shall always remember the surreal display and how it affected me. Sending love…❤️

Maybe her soul is hovering in the skies watching over you, or maybe nature is responding your call and bringing her magic to heal your wounded heart. Either way Soriah’s beautiful presence still fills the air. Sending love back. ❤

Too right! We might have a whole lifetime to practice those words to a beloved, whereas babes just blurt out syllables and get all the praise. Thanks sweetheart ❤
